SympathyTree was formed to provide people a virtual place to come and celebrate the lives of those they have recently lost and share their stories of love and loss, sadness and joy, and in the process, provide comfort to each other during a difficult time.

the challenge

More and more people are turning to the Internet to memorialize the lives of loved ones who have passed away. SympathyTree was founded to provide virtual memorial services to the bereaved during their time of grief onward. Each memorial needed to be simple to create, allow user content to be added and notifications to be sent, and provide a polished, compassionate design to respectfully honor the deceased.

the solution

Utilizing social networking technologies including email notifications, blog posting, commenting, and image and video uploading, SolutionSet worked with SympathyTree to create a technical architecture that allows users to create and personalize their own individual "blog-like" portal. Users are then able to upload their own personal contacts list from a variety of address book applications, create an events calendar, alert contacts via email as new events and stories are updated, and provide links to help others express their condolences. Portal "Moderators" can customize privacy levels to control who has access to their memorial as well as individual notification settings to allow their visitors to control how frequently they'd like to be contacted. The end result: a flexible, easy-to-use virtual memorial tool that allows anyone to create, customize, communicate, and cherish the deceased.
